PERSONAL WORSHIP

I was surprised that the lady who was rescued from the ruins of Haiti came out of the rubble singing a hymn of praise. It set me thinking about people’s relationship to faith. Her faith was stronger than the fear and probably the anger she felt while buried alive and trapped by her hand. Did she believe that she would be rescued and her family would be safe? It seems her faith transcended the situation she was in. I had an uncomfortable feeling that I would have challenged any God who put me in that situation. What sort of God knocks down a city. What kind of God picks on the poorest of countries to suffer such a horror? So the God of the Old Testament is still around? I found a better answer. It is a fact that the earth when it flexes itself does terrible things to humanity. It is a fact that humanity has done terrible things to the earth. It is a fact that humans have done and still do terrible things to each other. Somewhere beyond ourselves is a source of strength that can sustain us through all these terrible things. That is what she was tuned into. Is it part of the mystery of the universe? Is there really some connection with a dimension of guardian angels? What is this force I am trying to understand? Sometimes people touch it or they are touched by it - then they sing hymns of praise.

Prayer

O nameless power.

May the force of life give us an internal power - a light that burns from within our spirit.

May that light and its warmth be a strength to us in all that we do and in all the trials of our lives.

Let it show us how to listen when we would rather shout; to speak when weakness would make us silent; to stand up when we would rather hide.
